Suffering from chronic pain or arthritic pain can be devastating. It can severely lower your quality of life and impact your career, your personal relationships and your overall wellness. Radiofrequency is an innovative pain relief option. To find out if it may be right for you, please call experienced Cleveland surgeon Dr. Joseph Khouri at 440-446-8600. Radiofrequency can help you restore a pain-free life.
What is Radiofrequency?
Radiofrequency is a minimally invasive procedure. It works by decreasing the pain signals from the treatment area to the brain. This technology uses radiofrequency to heat and destroy targeted nerve tissue. The process itself is painless and involves a fast recovery.
The device works by emitting an electrical current. It is this current that heats the nerves that are sending pain signals to your brain. It is a non-surgical procedure that involves inserting a needle, but does not involve incisions or general anesthesia. The vast majority of patients go home after the procedure, after a short 15-30 minutes of rest in our comfortable recovery rooms.

The only way to know if it’s right for you is to meet with Dr. Khouri. He wants to get to know you and your pain condition, and to understand your goals. Only then can he make recommendations for treatment.
What Happens during Radiofrequency?
Most Radiofrequency procedures require only local sedation, so you will be able to remain awake during the procedure but completely numbed to pain. You’ll lie on your stomach. An IV may be inserted into your arm. The skin above the treatment area is cleansed.
Dr. Khouri inserts the Radiofrequency needle into the treatment area. He utilizes x-ray technology to place the needle in the correct location, the source of your chronic pain. Once the needle is in place, a microelectrode is inserted down the needle. The microelectrode emits an electrical current into the targeted nerve. It doesn’t affect surrounding nerves. The current heats the nerve tissue, thereby halting the transmission of pain signals from the nerve to your brain. The procedure typically takes 30-90 minutes, depending on the treatment area and other factors.
After Your Radiofrequency Treatment
Someone will need to drive you home from our office and stay with you for at least 24 hours. We may advise use of an ice pack to numb any discomfort in the treatment area and to reduce swelling. Hold the pack to the injection site for 15-20 minutes each time, every 2 hours.
Most people return to work after 1-4 days. It’s normal to experience some discomfort during this time. You’ll return for a follow-up appointment so Dr. Khouri can check on your progress.
For most people, the pain relief achieved lasts 9 months – 2 years. It’s possible for the nerve to regrow after a year or so, although that isn’t common. You are more likely to experience success with this procedure if you’ve had success with nerve blocks in the past. Dr. Khouri will help you decide if this procedure is right for you.
