What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure. It involves Dr. Khouri placing breast implants within the breasts, to increase size and improve the overall shape.
For years, breast augmentation has been the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of women undergo augmentation mammaplasty each year. Modern breast implants look and feel natural, and they tend to perform well for many years without needing replacement.
Although it’s the leading plastic procedure, we want to ensure it’s right for you. A one-on-one consultation with Dr. Khouri is necessary to make that determination. Dr. Khouri listens to you first so that he can understand your goals. He takes all the time needed to fully understand your objectives and answer your questions. Then, he will discuss all of the surgical options for achieving your goals. Dr. Khouri is committed to providing you with the clear, straightforward information you need in order to make this important decision.
Breast Augmentation Candidates
You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if any of the following apply:
- You want larger breasts
- You want a rounder, more aesthetically pleasing breast shape
- You want enhanced cleavage
- Your breasts are asymmetrical and you’d like them to be closer in size and shape
You should be old enough to make this type of important decision. Saline breast implants are FDA-approved for women age 18 and older, while silicone breast implants are approved for women age 22 and older.
You should be prepared to undertake the financial investment of breast augmentation. Dr. Khouri and our staff will provide you with the cost estimate at the time of your consultation. Insurance is very unlikely to cover an elective procedure like breast enlargement. We’ll discuss your payment options. Because breast augmentation lasts a long time and has high rates of satisfaction, most women who want the procedure are happy with the return they get on their investment.
Most women who want larger breasts are good candidates for this procedure. Dr. Khouri will also review your health history and determine whether any underlying medical conditions would make surgery unsafe. Rest assured he has your safety, wellness and quality of your results in mind. He’ll make sure you know if you are a good candidate and that you understand the reasons why.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
During the procedure, Dr. Khouri makes incisions around the nipple or within the breast crease. Saline or silicone breast implants are placed inside the breasts and the incisions are closed. You will be sedated under general anesthesia for this procedure.
You will feel groggy when you wake up from surgery. Your spouse or someone else of your choosing will stay at the surgery center and drive you home. You will also need someone to stay with you at your home for at least 24 hours. We will have discussed pain medications and you will have filled your prescription in advance of your appointment.
Recovery from Breast Enlargement
After breast augmentation, you’ll need to take some time off from:
- Strenuous exercise
- Social events
- Heavy lifting
- Household chores
Plan to do nothing more than rest and walk around occasionally, the first 2-3 days after breast augmentation. Walking is important because it promotes healthy blood circulation, but you won’t be able to engage in strenuous activity like weight-lifting, running, aerobics, etc. Those activities must be delayed for 6-8 weeks.
Most women return to work after roughly 1 week. You may need to wait longer if your job involves heavy lifting.
We provide you with complete aftercare and recovery instructions. We also provide tailored downtime instructions for your particular exercise routine, career, childcare duties and lifestyle. Your breasts will be swollen and tender after the procedure. The swelling diminishes over the course of 6-8 weeks, with the majority of swelling going down within the first 3 weeks. Your breast implants will look high on your chest for about 3 months, during which time they will gradually settle into place.
